The opening of Graumans Chinese
Theater
Grauman's Chinese Theater opened in
Hollywood, California on May 18, 1927. The grand opening of the
Grauman's Chinese Theater marked the most important and
spectacular theater opening. Movies stars all congregated at
the opening and fans clustered and riot broke out. The film
being premiered at the opening night of the Grauman's Chinese
Theater was Cecil B. DeMille's “The King of Kings,” which was
preceded by "Glories of the Scriptures," a live prologue
devised by master showman Sid Grauman. A Wurlitzer organ and
65-piece orchestra provided music for the prologue. The
Grauman's Chinese Theater opened to the public the
following day on May 19, 1927.
Chinese Theater History
The Chinese Theater history started with
Grauman who built a million dollar theater in downtown Los
Angeles and the Egyptian Theater just a few blocks from the
Graumans Chinese Theater. Grauman wanted to build his dream
theater and with the help of the Real Estate guru C.E.
Toberman, Grauman developed the plans for what is known today
as the Graumans Chinese Theater. the architech was Raymond
Kennedy. Graumans Chinese Theater cost $2 million dollars to
build and took 18 months.
Who owns the Graumans Chinese Theater?
Grauman never owned the theatre outright.
Grauman held a one-third interest with his partners,
Howard Schenck, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Sr.
In 1929, Grauman sold his share to Fox West Coast
Theatres and was the Managing Director of the theatre until his
death in 1950.
